Volcan Irazu set at 11,325ft (3432m) is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, it last erupted in 1963. From the summit it is possible to see both the Pacific and Caribbean. The lunar-like landscape at the top of the volcano contains several craters, two of which have spectacular sulphur lakes. The lower levels of the National Park are made up of lush cloud forest.
Specialty birds include Volcano Junco, Resplendent Quetzal, Firey-throated Hummingbird and Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl.
